Border Watch and tax registration

Dated customs rule changes matched to your own orders, and your sales abroad against tax registration lines.

  • Every plan
  • Shopify

In the Shopify app, open the Customs tab. Border Watch and Tax registration abroad are two of its cards.

What Border Watch shows

  • Rules that touch your store first: ones that match your orders from the last 60 days, or your products. The rest fold under "rules that do not touch your orders".
  • Its status: in force, or starts in a number of days. A rule that is not final carries a Not final chip and says why.
  • Your own numbers: how many of your orders were like it, and what it could cost at your current mix (est.).
  • Before and after: for a rule in force for 30 days or more, with 20 orders on each side. Zyro shows what changed, but never says the rule caused it.
  • Its source: the official page, when it was published and when Zyro checked it.

The rules

Zyro keeps the list by hand from official sources. The card shows the list's version and the date it was updated. Value limits in other currencies use the European Central Bank's daily reference rates. On 29 Oct 2026 the list held 12 rules, including:

  • EU: a EUR 3 duty for each type of item in a parcel worth EUR 150 or less, since 1 Jul 2026. A EUR 2 handling fee per item is expected from 1 Nov 2026, but is not final.
  • US: duty on every parcel, with no USD 800 exemption; the Section 301 duty on goods from 60 economies; 25% on goods from Brazil; 50% on listed Canadian goods.
  • Canada: a 50% counter-tariff on US-made clothing and furniture, since 8 Sep 2026.
  • UK: duty relief on parcels of GBP 135 or less ends by October 2028.
  • New Zealand: a levy on low-value goods, since 1 Apr 2026. Japan: the tax exemption on imports of JPY 10,000 or less is planned to end in April 2028.

Alerts

  • Watchdog has a Border Watch check. It warns when a rule from an official source that touches your store starts within 30 days, or started in the last 14. It emails you from 14 days before to 14 days after the start. It never pauses your pop-ups or tests.
  • The Morning Brief has a line when such a rule starts within 7 days, or started yesterday.
  • Today shows a card for a rule that starts within 30 days, or that costs you about $50 a month or more.
  • A rule from a secondary source (not a government or customs body) shows on the card, but never warns or emails.

Tax registration

The Tax registration abroad card tracks your sales against the lines where you may need to register for another country's sales tax. It is information, not tax advice.

  • Australia (for stores outside Australia): your sales to Australia in parcels of A$1,000 or less, after tax and refunds, for the last 365 days Zyro has, and projected from the last 90 days, against the A$75,000 GST line. Watchdog warns at 80% and emails you.
  • UK (for stores outside the UK): your parcels of GBP 135 or less in the last 60 days. Sellers outside the UK owe VAT on these from the first sale.
  • EU (for stores in the EU): your sales to other EU countries this year and last, against the EUR 10,000 One Stop Shop line.
  • I am registered: switch it on for a country and its alert and Today card go quiet.

What to know

  • The destination country is an estimate, because Zyro does not read shoppers' addresses.
  • Zyro cannot see your tax registrations. It only counts your orders.
  • With under 30 days of orders, the radar says it is too early. A new store gets the projected test until it has 12 months of orders in Zyro.
  • Rules change. Check the source link before you act.
